On Sunday, June 9 as part of the 73rd annual Tony Awards, we will have the opportunity to celebrate the legacy of a great champion for cancer patients and their loved ones.

The late CSC Champion and three-time Tony Award nominee and 2017 American Theatre Hall of Fame Inductee Marin Mazzie will be honored with a special Tony Award in recognition of her leadership within the theatre community for women’s health issues and her support of organizations such as the Cancer Support Community.

Mazzie was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2015. After her diagnosis, she dedicated herself to inform and empower others who were affected by the disease, using her platform to both advocate for and inspire people who are living with cancer and their loved ones.

Together with her husband and caregiver, Broadway star Jason Danieley, she appeared in various events for the Cancer Support Community, including being honored with our Founders Award for Empowerment at our 2016 Spring Celebration, advocating for policies that help people living with cancer during lobby days on Capitol Hill and before the White House Council on Women and Girls in Washington, DC, and spreading awareness about our work through her social media platforms and in appearances with the media.

Mazzie passed away on September 13, 2018 from ovarian cancer, but her positive spirit continues to inspire us. On March 17, Danieley honored her legacy by running in the New York City Half-Marathon in a special Team Marin with fellow actor Brian d’Arcy James. Together they raised nearly $50,000 in Mazzie’s memory.

In addition, Danieley presented Ashley Park, a Tony Award nominee and cancer survivor, with the inaugural Marin Mazzie Award of Empowerment at the 2019 CSC Spring Celebration.

The April 16 ceremony also featured a musical tribute to Mazzie from Tony Award winners Debra Monk, Donna Murphy, and Karen Ziemba, which you can watch below:
